What is Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) attribution?

Click-to-WhatsApp (CTWA) attribution is the practice of tying each WhatsApp lead back to the exact Meta ad and campaign that produced it. When someone clicks a Click-to-WhatsApp ad and messages the business, Meta attaches a click identifier (ctwa_clid) to that first message. Capturing it lets you measure cost per qualified lead per ad — not just cost per chat-open.

How it works

When a user clicks a CTWA ad, WhatsApp opens with a referral object on the first message containing the ctwa_clid. A platform like WhaLoop captures it via the official WhatsApp Cloud API and links the conversation to the originating campaign and ad. From there it can score the lead, attribute any resulting sale, and send a conversion back to Meta via CAPI.

Why it matters

Without CTWA attribution, Meta optimises for the cheapest chat-open or form-fill, because nobody tells it which leads became customers. With it, you see which ads bring buyers, cut the ads that bring tyre-kickers, and feed real outcomes back so Meta finds more real buyers — typically dropping cost per qualified lead by 50–77%.

FAQ

What is ctwa_clid?

ctwa_clid is the click identifier Meta places in the referral object of the first WhatsApp message after a Click-to-WhatsApp ad click. It ties the conversation to a specific ad.

Do I need to change my WhatsApp number for CTWA attribution?

No. With WhatsApp Coexistence you keep your existing number and inbox while connecting the official Cloud API that captures ctwa_clid.

How is this different from a WhatsApp inbox tool?

Inbox/broadcast tools send and receive messages. CTWA attribution tells you which ad produced each lead and feeds conversions back to Meta via CAPI — a different job that WhaLoop adds on top.
